2 Minutes Makeover Ideas

Take a visual scan of the room in need. Look for things that instinctually bother you and are ongoing visual eyesores. These can be things like a picture that is hung too high or too low, a plant with dead branches, or an accessory that you no longer like. Take two minutes and fix this problem; re-hang the picture, pull the leaves off the plant, or remove that accessory.

Add fresh flowers in a colorful vase.

Quickly rearrange the existing items on a mantel shelf or coffee table.

20 Minutes Makeover Ideas

Empty a bookcase of all its contents. Reposition the items back on the bookshelves in a new and interesting way. Instead of placing books standing up, stack them in neat piles of like size books and place them on the shelves with an accessory or two on top of the books.

Take down all the artwork on the walls and re-hang in new places in the room. It will look like you purchased all new artwork.

Rearrange your furniture in one room for a new look.

Swap the lamps in one room with the lamps in another room. That matching pair of lamps in your Master Bedroom might look great in your Living Room and the unmatched pair from the Living Room might add a touch of visual and unexpected interest to the bedroom.

2 Hours Makeover Ideas

In a bedroom, switch out the duvet cover or quilt, add decorative pillow shams, and hang some coordinating sheer delicate drapery panels.

In a Bathroom, add new towels in a fresh color, a clean new shower curtain, a new area rug, and new framed mirror.

An alternative in the Bathroom is to paint an old wood vanity a crisp white or even use this as an unexpected place to add a touch of color.

Go through your entire house with touch up paint. It is amazing what eliminating scuffs and dings on the walls can do to help brighten a home.

Hang a set of shelves in the Office or in a Child’s Bedroom for book or toy storage.

Hang a new light fixture in your Entry or Dining Room; it is like adding jewelry to an outfit.

2 Days Makeover Ideas

Repaint a room, any room from a Bedroom to the Kitchen, top to bottom in a fresh and up-to-date color.

For your patio, buy new furniture, an outdoor area rug, a few new potted plants, and hang some wooden carvings to transform an average patio to an outside oasis.

Give a bathroom a complete facelift by painting the walls, installing a new framed mirror and light fixture, new towels, new accessories and rugs. The room will appear brand new.

PostHeaderIcon Color Decoration at Home Design

Confused about selecting color for your home? Why not try choosing decorating colors based on your unique personality? I decided to have a bit of fun and searched out several websites that discuss color personality types.

The Pratt and Lambert color quiz was the most comprehensive color personality test of all those I reviewed. Taking into account not only color likes but other factors that make you uniquely you. This test was the only one that returned a color scheme that was very similar to my personal decorating style. I was impressed. According to the Pratt & Lambert site my color personality:

Colors in this palette are reminiscent of a sunny seaside. These combinations are refreshing and invigorating. They provide sparkle with lightness while also imbuing a sense of soothing calm. Oceanic hues are ideal for making a bathroom, bedroom or study an oasis. These colors provide a balance for those with a hectic life. The person who decorates with these colors is looking for their home to be their escape.

Home and Garden TV has an interesting color wheel that you can spin with your mouse and find the color that sings to your soul. When I spun the color wheel my eyes landed on my favorite color: Pink. Once I selected Pink, I was given five other shades of pink to choose from. I ended up selecting two pinks (Lavender Pink and Hot Pink) I adore. According to the HGTV site these color choices mean:

If you like lavender pink, you’re seeking to be more inventive. New possibilities flood your mind. By constantly examining possible practical applications, you create new things, new ideas. Using this purple-pink shade in room design is empowering. You and others will become more determined and self-constructive in a lavender pink office or library. Because it invites warm, exciting conversations, it’s perfect for dining or living rooms. Guests will feel welcomed.

If you like hot pink, you are constantly thinking about exciting things to do. Through your body language and appearance, without even being aware, you are sending out enticing messages. Designing with this magenta shade of pink creates adventurous conversations and situations. It makes you and others less skeptical and more enthusiastic. Use this color to turn dull into exciting. Think party room!

Not scared to use strong color, Winters often love reds but avoid soft pinks. Achromatic color schemes employing tonal variations of black, white and grey are commonplace, giving clean lines and sharp contrasts. Assertive purples are considered a safe choice for the main color in a color scheme, a sharp contrast to other seasons who will use purple sparingly as an accent. Blues run the gamut of ice blues through to blue blacks, cool and delineating and reflect onto the green palette giving a range of strong aquas. Neutrals are blacks, whites and greys for dramatic relief against the stronger feature colors. You won’t find warm creams here. Simple color schemes are favored – one color as the canvas and then accents of other strong colors for contrast and drama. Like Winter personalities, the Winter palette is self-assured and intense. Subtle colors are left to the other seasons.

Perhaps many of you are contemplating new decorating and painting projects and perhaps aren’t aware of the impact that color has on our mood. Before you pick up that paint brush or roller, read through our color psychology information. It just might help you set the appropriate mood for your indoor space.

First Things First – Choosing a Color Scheme

Red packs a wallop, physiologically speaking, increasing blood pressure, heartbeat and energy in most people. It instills feelings of intimacy and passion. Red also increases the appetite, which explains why it is used so often in restaurants, and why it can be a good choice for a formal dining room.

Orange, like red, tends to warm a room, but in a more friendly and welcoming way. As a result, paints in various shades and tints of orange work well in living rooms and family rooms.

Yellow is also warm and welcoming, but it is more attention- getting than either red or orange. For this reason, it is a good paint color to use in poorly lit foyers or dark hallways.

Blue, which is part of the cool color palette, makes us feel calm and tranquil, so it is ideal for use in bedrooms. But since blue works as an appetite suppressant (perhaps because there are few blue foods) it is not the best option for a dining room … unless you’re on a diet.

Green is another relaxing color that is much more versatile than blue. Light greens are ideal for bedrooms and living rooms; midtones are good for kitchens and dining rooms (many foods are green). Also, because green is calming, it is often used in hospitals, workplaces and schools.

Violet is a tricky color, psychologically speaking. Many adults dislike purples, but are fond of the rose family, which can work in many rooms, including dining rooms, bedrooms and libraries. Young children, on the other hand, respond favorably to violet, so this color can be used successfully in children’s bedrooms and play areas.

These general guidelines are a good starting point in your search for a paint color. But remember that color choice is a very personal matter. You’re the one who has to live with your new paint color, so choose a hue that suits you, your family and your lifestyle.

And after investing time to select just the right color, make sure it continues to look that way long-term by investing in a top quality paint.

PostHeaderIcon Why Bedroom Design Will Change With Child Development

The decoration of a child’s bedroom is vitally important. It is a place where children spend their formative years, from baby to teens and hence should be attractive, and in most cases will need updating throughout life. Beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers and cabinets will all be placed in the room, and the choice of these can make or break the aesthetics of a room. This is where bespoke furniture can be extremely worthwhile, creating a space that is practical, beautiful and child friendly.
Most childcare experts agree there are three major stages in development. When decorating a bedroom it is important to recognise and plan for these stages. Naturally in the first few years the room will be a nursery, with cots rather than beds, after this stage however the toddler needs a room that allows for the odd bump and fall without causing injury. Some bespoke furniture items will allow youngsters to have a ‘den’, bunk beds with drapes hanging form them are perfect for this purpose.
When a child is about six they reach their next stage of development. Naturally at this age childrens opinions on colour and even design are formed so including them in the decorating process can be fun and rewarding. Letting them be involved in the choice of bespoke items such as a pirate or princess bed can make the ideal room for play and rest. At this stage the important things to remember on the part of the parents is to include a large amount of storage space for toys and other items. Shelves and flat surfaces are also good to house ornamental items and prized playthings.
Adolescence is the final, and in many cases the most arduous stage of development. Bespoke items such as wardrobes are important in this stage for all of those clothes, especially in young girls, and certain furniture items should be able to accommodate items such as TVs, HiFis and games consoles. Additionally, ensuring there is extra seating should friends come over is advisable.
It is not only beds, wardrobes and cupboards that are important in childrens rooms. As previously stated storage is vital. In the early years drawers are more useful than hanging space, while little baskets to store socks and the like are also a worthy addition. In terms of window coverings during the early stages, having blinds that completely block light is a great way to create good bedtime procedure. As children get older however, patterned curtains and blinds can also be an attractive adornment. Bespoke handmade curtains can also bring a sense of style and elegance into rooms as children grow older.
Naturally as a parent, childrens safety is a major concern. Therefore it is important to make precautions such as tying away all cables and wires as these can be a serious tripping hazard. Near beds it is also important to use anti slip tape on the bottom of rugs to avoid falls, this will be especially important if on a hard flooring. If your bespoke furniture items are tall, securing them to the wall is advisable to avoid damage should children decide to climb them. And finally buying items such as socket covers, and plug-in night lights can prevent electrical hazards being a problem in the room.
Hopefully this information has given parents the most important factors to consider when choosing the bespoke furniture items and decor of a childrens room. With these pointers it should be possible to create the right bedroom for every stage of development.
