Kitchen Remodeling – Don’t End Up With an Ugly Kitchen, Empty Wallet, and Sad Face!
Kitchen remodeling is coming into style again, since most of the trends of yesterday are finally dying out and kitchens are starting to look like they just walked out of the Brady Bunch’s house. There are a lot of things that you need to think about when taking on a task like this, including appliance types, cabinet look/type, countertops, and cost.
Appliances are hard to pick in a kitchen remodeling job. Do you want stainless steel, which is harder to keep clean? Do you want to go with white appliances and risk them turning off-white in 10 years? Do you want to go black, which darkens the room up? Choices, choices, choices…welcome to kitchen remodeling.
Another thing to consider when doing a project like this is the look of kitchen countertops and kitchen cabinets. I lump these together since they are generally thought of as separate items, but in reality they both need to match since they are together all of the time. Consider styles and types of decorating when doing your room. Do you want a traditional look, a modern look, or something else all together?
Kitchen remodeling cost is certainly a problem with today’s economy and income. A job like this is never cheap, so I recommend planning ahead. I have worked on many tasks like this in the past and they always, I repeat ALWAYS, come in over budget. Plan ahead and you won’t run out of money and be stuck with half a kitchen.
In your kitchen remodeling, be sure to think of everything and have a plan before you begin. If not, you could end up with an ugly kitchen, an empty wallet, and a sad face.
Luxury Bedroom Design
A number of interior designers have had successes from previous designs that capture the plain white room into something that can distract an owner depending on the furnishings needed. This was a prolific luxury bedroom design during the 80’s and 90’s, and although it has changed a little, the particular theme can be found in several ways.
Walls can be decorated or painted in several motifs that has a more regal approach, consisting in some bright colors like red. Pinstripes are also the same, mainly contrasting from gold to silver and bronze. This is a more common motif that can be found in English luxury bedroom design for castles and the like, while others would resort to using wallpaper that bear the country of origin’s coat of arms. As for decorations, it’s all about hanging expensive paintings from various artists or replicas. A modern approach is the usage of stainless steel and at times plastics, which gives it a more eccentric look. There have been a few designs using glass in various patterns, something that would reflect light during nighttime and show the shape of the etched glass. This can also apply to some other furniture like expensive looking drawers, armoires and mirrors.
Lighting is all about lamps and well-designed sconces and wall lamps that capture the essence of luxury, and may have a price tag of well over $100. Of course the investment is well worth it as it provides much better lighting given to the number of top of the line bulbs being used.
As for furnishings, the more unique decorators and interior designers have come up with a mixture of Asian and European influence. Beds with corner posts or some of the modular types found in hotels is one way to give the room an appearance of modern luxury. Electronics like HDTVs mounted on the wall or the kind where rock singer Ozzie Osborne would have as his bed come equipped with a TV that pops up at the end of the bed.
Anything shiny is all about having achieving a luxury bedroom design, allowing stretching the imagination as far as the budget would go for. And it’s not always the brand names that would catch the attention of visitors, but to allow the shimmer like the owner himself.
Children’s Outdoor Furniture – Style Comes In All Sizes
As we approach spring. the temperature warms up, the days get longer and we find ourselves spending more time outside. Our thoughts turn to grilling, spring sports, and outside entertaining. Do we always remember the children and their needs?
Children need things that have been created just right for their size. It is very difficult for a child to sit and eat at a picnic table made for an adult. Instead, they need a picnic table made for people their size. If outdoor entertaining is something you and your family enjoy, then you may consider investing in some furniture for the children in your life. This will make it easier for your guests who have children as well.
You may initially be wondering what this is going to cost you. Depending on what you want to spend, you can find a durable picnic table for children for $60-$120 dollars, brand new. If you look around, you may be able to find something at an even lower price.
The next question you may be asking is ‘Where can I find children’s outdoor furniture? There are actually two answers:
First you can go to a store like Wal-mart, Lowe’s, K-Mart, or Toys R Us Find what you want purchase it and take it home.
Second, you can shop on the Internet. Go to Google.com and type in the words ‘children’s outdoor furniture’. Look at the websites until you find what you want. Purchase it online and have it shipped to your front door. The downside of this option is that you have to pay the cost of shipping and you have to have a credit card. To avoid the shipping costs, you may want to watch for sales or specials where the company offers free shipping on purchases. On the credit card front, while most people have credit cards not everyone wants to put their credit card information online. You can check to see if the company will allow you to mail in a check.
It is also difficult for a child to play adult made games, such as baseball, volleyball or even croquet. There are a number of kid appropriate games as well as other outdoor furniture items that are sized for kids.
Other Children’s outdoor furniture include lounge chairs, character tables and chairs, and growing in popularity are swings and playhouses. With children’s outdoor entertainment being a huge field of choice you can find almost anything you need to make your children happy, and soon your house will be the house where all the kids play.
If you are not sure how important it is to have this type of outdoor furniture for children, think about the final effects. If the kids have furniture they can comfortable sit on and use, they will be happier with their picnic experience. Happy kids means less crying, whining and ultimately happier parents.
As you make your plans for spring and summer, include the outdoors, the grill, the neighbors, and the kids and lets just see who has the more fun.
Care of Western Red Cedar Outdoor Furniture
So, you purchased Western Red Cedar (WRC) outdoor furniture and got it home. You place it in that perfect spot you had in mind and it looks beautiful and elegant. But then what? Do you let it age naturally; changing to silver gray? If so, should you do anything to care for it? Or do you want to keep it looking like it did when you brought it home?
Western Red Cedar requires very minimal care if allowed to age naturally. Just hand wash it with a mild soap and water a couple of times a year. Also, make sure the hardware is tightened and not rusting. That’s it! You don’t have to take it indoors, put it in storage or anything else. It will age to a beautiful silver gray color with a raised grain.
Western Red Cedar is a soft wood, it is best not to pressure wash it, as this may damage the wood. Some suggest using steel wool or other abrasive for stubborn stains. However, steel wool will leave behind tiny particles that may embed into the furniture and begin to rust. Any abrasive material may damage the wood. Therefore, hand washing with a soft rag or sponge is the best means of washing outdoor furniture. For stubborn stains, check with your local hardware store and make sure they know you are cleaning Cedar outdoor furniture. They can suggest an agent you can use on stubborn stains.
If you want to allow the natural aging process but do not wish to have a raised grain, a wood sealer can be used. If you use a sealer with UV protection, you can protect the tones of your WRC furniture as well. Again, your local hardware store can help you with choosing the appropriate sealer.
If you prefer to keep your garden, patio and outdoor furniture looking as it did when you purchased it, there are several options available. Your local hardware store can also help you with many of these methods. However, keep in mind that it is very important they understand you are working with Cedar outdoor furniture.
Wood Sealer – wood sealers block the pores of the wood keeping dirt and moisture out. To keep the warm colors of cedar, use a sealer with ultra violet inhibitors. Otherwise, your furniture will turn the silver gray of natural aging but will not have the raised grain. It is the ultra violet rays of the sun that causes the change in color. The wood sealer should be reapplied every year.
Stain – stain is available in many different colors and with or without UV inhibitors. To keep the natural warm shades of your WRC furniture, two coats of a clear stain with UV inhibitors should be applied annually. Keep in mind that all colors of stain should be considered PERMANENT.
Oil – Teak or linseed oil is not recommended for Cedar outdoor furniture as the oil will tend to collect dust particles which will stick to the furniture. Also, oil will not keep the WRC from changing to the silver gray color. It will only slow down the natural aging process and repel water.
Paint – painting WRC outdoor furniture is not recommended. All paint will eventually blister and peel. Paint traps moisture in the wood. If you wish to change the color of your WRC garden, patio and outdoor furniture, consider staining it.
Preservative Treated – any part of WRC furniture that will be in the ground (i.e. arbor posts, pergola posts, fence posts, landscape ties etc.) needs to be preservative treated.
Whether you let your WRC outdoor furniture age naturally or prefer to keep the warm color and tones at the time of purchases, it will be something you will enjoy with your family and friends for a very long time.
Halogen Floor Lamps
Halogen light technology is a step forward for floor lamps.
Tungsten-halogen technology surpasses the traditional incandescent lighting in both energy efficiency and in the ability to focus the light. While halogen bulbs aren’t as energy efficient as fluorescent lighting, they are very efficient at pin pointing their light in a specific direction, thanks to their parabolic aluminized reflector that redirects light that previously would have been scattered in undesired directions. Thus, halogen lights are ideal for galleries and gardens where specific items need to be showcased through spotlighting. Halogen lights are also perfect reading lights.
Note that halogen floor lamps should be chosen as a reading light or a spotlight only – not as a primary source of light for a room. Primary halogen lamps shine their light directly on the ceiling and depend on the usually white ceiling to reflect that light throughout the room. Due to the inefficiency of this process, these lights must be much more powerful than a more specialized lamp. Also, this application wastes the halogen lamp’s ability to accurately focus light in a tight beam, and they are restricted to rooms with white or light color ceilings that lack texture.
Halogen lights have a very long life – anywhere from 2,000 to 3,500 hours. Also, they give off a very crisp white light that eases the strain on the eye. Add to this the fact that they don’t fade over time like their incandescent predecessors, and it’s easy to see why halogen headlights are becoming more popular.
They are now more affordable, so halogen floor lamps become the ideal lighting selection for many rooms. With your new appreciation of halogen lighting, you can only wait excitedly for the availability of the more energy efficient fluorescent technology in a floor lamp. With the halogen lamp for reading and spotlighting and the fluorescent lamp for primary lighting, the incandescent light may eventually be rendered obsolete.
